UV specification essentials
Six things a UV clause should say, in the order a consultant would write them. Brand-neutral; the clause language is free to use.
| # | Clause | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Full circulation flow, installed after filtration and before the chlorine injection point, with isolation and bypass | Guidelines §4.2.2.1; side-stream UV does not meet them |
| 2 | Third-party bioassay validation — NSF/ANSI 50 listing or the US EPA UVDGM protocol — for at least 3-log Cryptosporidium reduction per pass at the design flow and a design UVT of 94%; certificate and flow-versus-UVT table submitted with the tender | Manufacturer test reports are not validation; 94% UVT is the PWTAG TN31 design assumption |
| 3 | Medium-pressure lamps for indoor pools, program pools and interactive features; low-pressure units only where the validated flow and the engineer allow | Combined-chlorine (chloramine) destruction needs the polychromatic spectrum |
| 4 | Calibrated intensity sensor with low-intensity alarm, automatic sleeve wiper, lamp-hour counter, power turn-down, alarm contacts and 4–20 mA or Modbus to the BMS, flow-switch interlock | So the unit can be monitored, not just installed |
| 5 | Stated lamp life and change intervals; spares held in Australia; warranty term and the entity that honours it | The ten-year cost, not the capital price |
| 6 | Measured UVT, flow and intensity recorded at commissioning and kept with the pool's records | Regulation 2022 Sch 1 cl 11 |
Control clauses that go with it
Control on measured free chlorine and pH; total chlorine measured so combined chlorine is logged; automatic proportional dosing with flow interlocks; readings logged at intervals of 15 minutes or less and kept six months; 4–20 mA or Modbus outputs so the log is independent of the controller; daily DPD check.
